The United Nations Security Council has commended the signing of the Libyan Political Agreement to resolve the country’s institutional and security crises.
A statement from the United Nations in New York on Thursday noted that the agreement was signed on July 11 by Libyan delegates.
It observed that the agreement would move the political transition process forward via the formation of a Government of National Accord in the country.
In the statement, members of the Security Council, therefore, called on all parties to engage with the Libyan Political Dialogue and unite in support of this agreement.
“The Security Council support the formation of a Government of National Accord to help rebuild the country and to tackle the growing threat of terrorism in Libya and its neighboring countries,” it stated.
The members encouraged the UN Support Mission in Libya to advance relevant efforts for coordination of international assistance to the Government of National Accord.
They thanked the Special Representative to the Secretary General, Mr. Bernardino León for “his tireless efforts in this UN-facilitated, Libyan-led dialogue process and agreement.”
The members expressed gratitude to the Kingdom of Morocco for its efforts in advancing this agreement.
They also expressed their gratitude to other neighbours and regional partners, including Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia, for their contributions to the process.
NAN recalls that León, on Wednesday while briefing the Council, said the political agreement signed by many Libyan leaders had brought the country one step closer to ending its four-year conflict.
León urged the UN Support Mission in Libya to press on all parties to engage constructively in the dialogue process.
The agreement, he said, set out a comprehensive framework that would allow Libya to complete a political transition it started in 2011.
He said the agreement also provided the basis for further talks towards fulfilling the goals of the 2011 revolution.
